When I connect to my wife's iMac, I get a connect screen that lets me connect as a guest, as a registered user, or using an Apple ID.

I tried using using my AppleID but failed, tried using my Mac's ID and failed, then I created myself as a user on her computer, and connected using that ID and succeeded. We both use Ventura.

Could someone please explain how those various connections work?

Thanks.

You can connect to another computer when you have an account on that computer. That account could be a local user, an account associated with an Apple ID and if guest access is allowed (not recommended) then anyone can log in.

However, you cannot login to another computer using your local Mac creds or Apple ID if there is no account using that information on the other machine.
