I agree with the above. We don't need to preach "Mac" here. But I think there is a few steps you "the original poster can take And I'll list then in point form. 1. Download this. "Onyx" Titanium Software Be sure you download the version of the Onyx application that works with your version of OS X you are running. And be sure to read the documentation with the application well. And then you can use the application to run many maintanance things with Onyx. And that might help you with your Mac being slow. 2. I like Thunderbird. It seems to work well for me. But you can try this: Thunderbird Help - Online Help for the Mozilla Thunderbird Mail Client And try to get it to answer your questions you have. But if after everything you can not get thunderbird to work, there is an alternative. This alternative is "Mail". it is an application, does basically the same things as Thunderbird. But it is made by Apple and comes standard with every OS X. It might jut run a touch faster as it'd be more optimised for OS X. 3. This point is totally optional. But if you really want to give Mac another shot. Then there is a book you can buy. "The Missing Manual". They have a different one out for each version of OS X. And many people (myself included) feel it is one fo the best how to books for OS X. Evne pros get something from those books. A totally optional thing. But ti helps a lot of people. 4. "Mactracker". Mactracker That is am application that is like an encyclopedia about every Macintosh computer ever made. And an application I recommend to everyone. And why I say this to you is, you can get specific details about the Mac you own and you can post those details up here on this forum so we forum goers can more adequately help you to fix your issues. Plus it's cool to have that kind of info at your fingertips. Well I think so anyways. 5. "I am sill trying to figure out also how to have high res photos and rename them and lower the res and create a new folder for them. Preview lets me adjust the originals but not keep both." You said this in your original post. And there is an easy work around with this. in the finder you just have to select one of your pictures and press "Command + D" or go to file and press duplicate. Then you have a duplicate file of the picture. And then you can play with one of the duplicates and it does not matter if the original is not kept when you deit the photo cause the other duplicate file is always there untouched as a backup for you. And if you need a 3rd or 4th copy or another file duplicated the same process is done. "Command +D" or file -> duplicate in the finder. 6. About your Canon EOS 350D card reader. There is this from Apple. Mac OS X v10.5: Digital camera RAW formats supported Mac OS X v10.6: Digital camera RAW formats supported So if you are using an older version of OS X, your camera card might not be suported by the system. But by upgrading to the lastest system your computer will handle you should fix the issue. If you do not post back here about it and someone will help you to look into this issue further. 7. "I have tried runing a fan under it" If you have OS X 10.4 or later on your computer there is a widget you can download that will tell you the current temperatures of your core computer components. And then you will know if or if not there is a heat issue with your computer. Also this widgit has a lot more useful information. iStat Pro, a Dashboard Widget by iSlayer Lastly I'm sure we can get your as you call it "inferior piece of machinery" to work and do just what you need it to do. ANd if you have any other question feel free to ask.
