I've got a sweet Intel Imac that was suffering from bad / inconsistent boots and poor performance. I reinstalled the OS but that didn't help, all I got was grey screen and sometimes an Apple logo but no beach ball. I couldn't get it to boot with an external OS, nor in target disk mode, not even when I pulled the hard drive. The hard drive mounted in an external enclosure no problem I disconnected the Optical Drive and replaced the original hard drive and had a succesful boot right away.. Should I replace the Optical Drive, the O/D flex cable, both or neither? Why would the O/D affect the OS that way? thanks.
