We have achieved a success. Hubs had the idea of putting all the blessed folders into a new folder, which he called 'Carpark'. He could not rename Finder or System, but we thought they would be hidden there and the re-install would create fresh versions. It worked and we got the desktop, but we don't quite understand WHAT happened as it made 'Carpark' the blessed folder and did not create a new system folder. There are not many extensions mounting, which we need to investigate, yet the text to speech piped up when we were trying to put a systems folder in trash. Anyway. We have changed 'Carpark' to 'System Folder', moved over the files and folders that appeared in the old system folder, got rid of any duplicates except those we thought might have extra content in the old folder, left those in place and called that folder 'Old Extras', and so far all seems to be working fine. I was a bit concerned that we might have lost his IP, but there is one there, so I assume it is his and not system generated,so apart from needing to download a new copy of QuickTime Update, he should have everything there, if not where it used to be. Going to switch it off and on one more time before I get on with other things, but am hopeful that it is sorted. Thank you for all your help :)
