Avi files on usb stick

When i had a pc i could put avi fies onto a usb stick and played them on my smart tv?
Now i have an iMac this does not seem to work.
I have formatted the stick,added some files but the tv does not recorgnise the stick.
Any idea what i am doing wrong ?

The process doesn't change with the Mac. But how did you format the UBS stick? If you formatted it in anything other than FAT32 (newer TV's might be fine with ExFAT), then the TV won't recognize it..

Looks like i formatted it wrongly.
I will use fat and do it again.

Excellent. That's likely the issue. Windows will want to default to NTFS formatting unless you choose otherwise, macOS likely will default to HFS (its native format) unless you choose otherwise. All external media should be formatted in ExFAT so that you can share it across computers and a variety of devices like TVs and so on.

ExFAT has been around long enough that all devices support it, so go with that since it gets beyond the file size limits that FAT32 had..
