Please Help. I replaced the dead power supply for an Apple iMac "Core 2 Extreme" 2.8 24-Inch (mid 2007) and just plugged in the power cord in and the video card went up in smoke to my horror.
I removed the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro Video Card and powered up again and the Diagnostic LED lights lit up except #4 which means the LCD display panel in not on.
So does anyone know why this would happen and if I put a new card in could it happen again?

Are you absolutely sure the proper replacement power supply was installed?

If the video card really did fry...it's possibly because:

- The power supply was supplying too much "juice" (wrong power supply).
- Something was not installed correctly.
- Something was not attached or not attached properly...and may have grounded out on the chassis.

Sorry to hear about the mishap.

Welcome to our forums.

My guess is you either purchased and installed the wrong power supply or installed the replacement power supply incorrectly. And yes, replacing the video card with a new one will likely result in it going up in smoke also. You might want to go to www.ifixit.com and take a look at replacing the power supply for your iMac and making sure you have the correct part.

(Nick types faster than me, but we're both on the same page with this one.) ;D

Thank you, the power supply number is the PA-3241-02A and I got one one ebay with the part number PA-3241-02A1 and looks identical except the power wires are opposite to the original one

I've been in electronic repair for many years before I retired and have learned to avoid those parts that "look identical" but were not the original. I think you answered your own question. You installed an incorrect power supply for your iMac.

Not exactly sure if this means what it seems to mean. But if the power wires are opposite...that wouldn't be a very good thing. And unfortunately the results seem to confirm that.

Yes my worst fear, I find it odd that this happened and the power button hadn't even been pushed.

I noticed that the Diagnostic LED lights #3 lit up
LED #3 Indicates that the computer and the video card are communicating. this is with no video card installed??

The video card is fried...very likely the wrong power supply is in place...and who know's if the logic board is any good.

Until good parts are sourced (if that's the plan)...not much point in investigating any further.

Time for a brewski and sandwich!;)

And most of the good Apple techs I know are even fussier when it comes to Mac repairs or part swaps or replacements…

If it helps, the old mac fixit site used to be a good place to check if it's still supplying up to date swap and replacement info at:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com

Maybe the OP might want to try checking there.

Looks like they're no longer in that business.

Good to hear it's all working, and I hope at an affordable justifiable cost.

Congrats.:) Could have been a risky move (based on the info given in post #1)...but sounds like it worked out. And that's what counts!:)
