A couple weeks ago I read an article in popular science explaining how if you MBP was plugged directly into the modem or router you could turn on the share internet settings and it would in essence turn you mbp into a wireless transmitter and another computer in the house could pick up the signal and run wireless. My question is can this be done with my imac? Can I use the imac to send the signal to my mbp? If thats the case I could get rid of my airport extreme.

Well the iMac is very similar in it's internals as the MBP so yes, if it's possible with the MBP, then iMac should be more than capable.

Just go to System Preferences > Sharing. Assuming you are running 10.5 Leopard, just check the "Internet Sharing" option. The options are self explanatory and you should be fine without any further guidance. Let us know how it goes.

you would need to set up a ah hoc network for your other devices to connect to.
to do this...

1)click the airport menubar icon
2)click create network
3)enter the information (network name, etc.) and click ok

^^ That will not allow another computer to use the internet that the iMac is using...
