Well, my transition to Mac is nearly complete. I received my little iBook from FedEx today and I am absolutely loving it! I will delve into the various technical experiences and questions I have had in a moment. First I wanted to relate something extremely interesting I learned about Macs today, iBooks specifically: women dig it.
I carried my machine to campus today in order to get it set up to use the wireless network. While in the library, just fiddling around with various settings and tweaks, I was approached by a woman I only knew vaguely from seeing her at the fitness center. She was eyeing the iBook as she walked over to me and said how "adorable" she thought my computer was. She started asking questions and I passed off what paltry knowledge I had as being Gospel. One thing lead to another and we are going out this coming weekend! Thank you Mr. Jobs!

Anyway, on to some of my experiences. As I mentioned above, my campus has a wireless network installed using the Aegis client for authication and security. My first frustration of the day was in finding out the version my school had available wasn't compatible with Panther. The redemption of this was in finding out that OS X already supported the various protocals Aegis had supplied formerly. All it took was configuring a new Internet connection using my inexpensive D-Link wireless dongle and I was in business.

So far, all the apps I have installed and ran have done so with far less difficulty than Windows. I do have some questions, however:

1. There are some programs that Panther shows as being mounted discs. VLC player is one of them. If I "eject" the disc, that is the same as uninstalling the program, correct? How do I install it permanently in my Applications folder?

2. Where do "ejected" disc images go? The Trash? Some kind of holding folder?

3. How do I access the Trash if I accidentally deleted something?

Also, in going through my old PC applications to find out which ones might run on my Mac, I found several that would only if I had OS 9. There doesn't appear to be a place I buy this from and none of my local stores carry it. Is it something is no longer supported or has it been available for free? The latter would be far more appealing.

for the programs that show as a mounted disk, you drag them out of that folder, into your applications folder..then when you unmount the disk, it will still be there..forever.

You send disk images to trash to disconnect them, or you can control click, and select eject.

to get to the trash, you just click on it in the dock...I don't guess I know exaclty what you mean on this one...as long as you haven't emptied your trash, everything will collect in there..and you can just take it out...if you emptied it, then I don't know what to do to get anything back..I'm assuming it's gone forever.

I think you should have classic installed on your computer..which will run os 9 programs...though I'm not sure they're still doing that..though I think it's on your install disk somewhere..I'm sure someone else can be more specific with this.

I think what he's trying to ask is, "in windows, if I messed up and deleted something I could get it back by doing this and this...what do I do if I do that in a mac?"
yes? no?
And os9 is still coming with osx, (unless they changed since i got mine in july...) so yeah, that's my deal.

Double click on the rectangular mounted disk icon and it will open the disk. Then just drag the application icon to wherever you want it to stay, and it's installed. Keep in mind that certain downloaded "images" contain an actual installer package, so if that's the case, just double click the installer icon, and it will walk you through everything. Most disk images contain a Read Me file that explains how to install the program.

2. Where do "ejected" disc images go? The Trash? Some kind of holding folder?

Well, they were never really "there" (hence the term image), so once you eject them, they're basically just gone. Kind of like ejecting an actual CD from a drive.

3. How do I access the Trash if I accidentally deleted something?
There should be a Trash icon in your dock. Double click it and it will show you everything in the Trash. If the icon looks like it has crumpled paper in it, then there's something in the Trash. If it just looks empty, it's, well, empty.

As for OS 9, if you just try to run the program on your machine, Classic (what OS 9 is now called within OS X) should start automatically.

Ok, clicked on the clock and got...the clock settings. Did I miss something?

Also, I am looking back through the Panther discs I have to see if OS 9 is included. I will let you know what I find, but if it isn't there, is it legal for someone to send or upload a copy to me?

The Trash is in the Dock, not clock. ;) The Dock is the bar at the bottom of your screen with the icons in it. The Trash should be all the way on the right side (looks like a wire metal waste basket).

I don't think you really need to check the disks for Classic, it should already be installed. If you want to be sure, click on the little Apple logo in the upper-left corner of your screen, then select "System Preferences..." Then click on the Classic icon, which should be in the bottom left row. Finally, click "Start", and if Classic is working properly, it should start. Don't forget to stop it once you're finished.

I finally found the Trash icon on the dock. Yeah, that's embarassing.

As for Classic, according to my system preferences, it's not installed at all. Furthermore, a check of the Panther discs I have show nothing even related to that OS. Is that something I can get from somewhere?

I'm not sure it shows up on the Panther disks, but it should be there. In System Preferences, do you at least have the icon for Classic? It should be in the bottom row of icons, to the left of the "Date & Time". The icon is a big "9".

No Panther doesnt come with Classic, Jaguar was the last one to come with Classic, unless you had Jaguar and then did an update to Panther then you would have it, but if you did a clean install.. then no Classic

If you bought Panther, it comes with Classic support, but you need to install OS9 to use it. OS9 is not delivered with Panther.

But if your Mac was delivered with Panther, you have OS9 on the system restore disks.

And it is not legal to get a copy of OS9 from someone else...you need to buy it (check eBay).

Well, I think those last two pretty much answer the question, but just the same, I am rather proud of figuring out how to use the screen capture utility, so I am not going to let it go to waste:

Oooh. When I did my clean install of Panther, I also installed my iBook's original application restore CD (with all of the additional applications on it). I never checked on Classic until after I'd installed both CD's, so I assumed it had come with Panther when it actually must have been installed through the iBook CD. Interesting. Considering the size of OS 9, I'm not sure why Apple couldn't have included it with the full Panther CD.

I guess it's not a question of disk space, but more about marketing...
Apple wants their customer to use Mac OS X, and move away completely from OS9, if possible. That's probably why they don't include it anymore with OS X.
