Installing Apps

This might be dumb Q. But here it goes. All the applications I install remain on the desktop like a drive. is there any way I can get rid of these on the desktop. Basically now it is both on the dock (the icon) and the desktop ( looks like a drive). Just bought my first mac 2 weeks ago after a lifetime using PC, so I dont know anything! and I just found this cool forum!

Also, how can I watch wmv file playing on a webpage? I couldn't figure out the flip4mac correctly. It looks like its not a freeware. Thanks

Yes, install it. :D;)

To install something properly, you must copy the app to your Applications folder by dragging its icon there. Then you can eject that disk icon by dragging it to the Trash.
