    How Good is the iMac?
Give me the real scoop. Is the iMac really as high-end as advertised? Is it reliable? Does it slow down with time? Does it get considerably less cool as you have it for a long time? Is it intuitive? Are there any real pitfalls I should know about?

I'm talking 20-inch, by the way.

The slow down of the system really depends on the upgrades/specs of your system.

The "cool-factor" is really user dependent, but I think they are cool from the first day, to the last. There really aren't any big problems with it, and it is a very reliable computer.

Not a problem. The iMac is a beautiful computer, I want one too! I'm trying to save up for the 24''!

I'm sitting in front of a 24" iMac right now. I upgraded tp 2 gig of memory and the better video card. I have had absolutely no problems with it so far.

I just played a mission of Call of Duty 2 at fullscreen resolution while encoding a DVD in the background.

I've only had my iMac for a couple of months. Nothing but please so far. One of my concerns was the "slow down factor" as well. I can honestly say, I haven't experienced any slow down as of yet (knock on wood). As far as the coolness factor. Everyone who has seen my iMac so far have only oooo'd and ahhhh'd at how good my iMac looks. As a long time computer user, my iMac has been the best looking and best performing computer I have ever had.

    Specs:
Macbook - 2.4 ghz intel core duo / 4 gig of ram.
For me it isn't how good it looks (and it does look good) it's just how solid the whole thing is compared to a PC.

I really really cannot wait until I get mine. I'm waiting for leopard and hoping that a new imac comes along at the same time. if not, ill get myself a powerbook.

    Specs:
    20" iMac, 2GB Ram, 250GIG HD etc.
I have owned my 20" iMac for a few month now and its just such a great device. I am a Server Engineer and we use mostly Server 03 and Server 03 x64 and Linux. After battling with Windows for 10hrs a day at work i simply want a system that works at home. So, i took the plunge and bought a 20" iMac and couldnt be happier. The secret really is OS-X and the perfectly matched drivers for it, it gives me an experience so much better then my work computer which is composed of dual xeon cpus's, 4Gigs of ram, 5x Seagate 15.4k SAS drives in a Raid 5 array and thats because Windows chokes every little thing. Argh!

Anyway, sorry for the ramble. The build quality on the iMac is wonderfull, its intelligently layed out and works wonderfully. Two thumbs up!
Not beeing able to use Mac OS X is like not beeing able to ride a tricicle.

    20" iMac Core 2 Duo 2.16Ghz, 500GB HDD, 1GB RAM, 128MB ATI Radeon X1600
I've had my iMac for 3 months, and the only slowdown there has been was that it used to boot in 30 seconds, now it takes 5-10 seconds longer.

I've been running Photoshop CS3, Firefox and Adium at the same time and still had no slowdown issues, although recently I realised I need a gig more RAM to do this, but since 2GB of Crucial RAM is only £50, or about $100, it's no biggie.

I wonder whether partitioning the drive would make any difference.

I keep nothing except the apps and some desktop pix (otherwise, stretch to fit won't work) in the boot partition. Everything else, including mp3s and the like, are on other partitions. I've never noticed any boot slowdown time in the years I've owned it.

That and he might have some startup items loading also which would make it a bit slower booting up. I am the same as you, I try to keep the boot drive as clean as possible and use externals to keep all the "MESS" on!
