I have a rar. file i'm trying to open. i used stuffit, and i can see that it 'unpacks' the rar, but i'm clueless as to what to do with it next.do i have to use any of the files? if the rar when unpacked has an exe. file in it what does it mean? that its a rar. for a mac?

Do i have to assign a destination, cause stuffit just sends it to my desktop? when i open the folder after it is i unpacked, all i see are exe. txt. terminal icons with the word unrar. rar. and default sfx.

i know i prob sound really stupid, but i've just never had to deal with one before.

    This should do it.

UnrarX works fine for me. It puts the rebuilt file in the same directory as the .rar files.

[edit] If the resulting file is an exe, something's up. It won't run on OSX, you'll need Windows.

    Huh??

A RAR file is just an archive, a file that "contains" one or many files inside in a compressed form.
(RAR is an "archive" format, just like the more common ZIP format. Perhaps you have used ZIP files before?)

StuffIt uncompressed whatever was inside the RAR file and put it in a new folder.

"when i open the folder after it is i unpacked, all i see are exe. txt. terminal icons with the word unrar. rar. and default sfx."

All the files you see in that folder are the contents of that RAR file.
(note: An EXE file is a Windows program, so you can't open it on Mac OS X.)

What exactly do you want to do anyways?
Where did you get that RAR file?

If you found .exe files, the program is Windows only. What program is it that you are trying to unpack from the RAR?

It was probably mistitled. If its a .exe, then it will only work in Windows.

If you downloaded something from limewire and it had "Mac OSX" in the title, and an EXE file archived inside of it, there's a 99.9% chance that the whole package is a virus. I would get rid of it. Limewire is virus ridden anymore, I refuse to use it.

If the file is mac compatible yes, but clicking those files after someone just told you they're probably a virus isn't the best idea hehe.

If there's an exe file in there, it simply won't work.

    Trash it.

snoslicer8 is absolutely correct. The best way for spam, porno and virus distributors to get around protection software is to mis-label it. The file you have downloaded is intended to be a problem. It is not a brush set!
