jakee, by taking the laptop to a different wireless connection point you did the first step in trouble shooting. The fact that it is acting the same way is not good, it points to a problem with the wireless card. Just for fun, make a new user account, call it "test", no password, and log into it. Does it have the same problem?
I have never heard of a reinstall or a directory repair that would solve the problem you describe. Is the laptop still under warranty? Applecare?
Delete the test account when you are done.

The fact that it works at all and then drops off is odd. I am going to guess that one or both of the antenna connections is loose, disconnected, something.
If you are still under warranty, let Apple deal with it. Getting at that card will void your warranty. If you are out of warranty, you can put an "N" speed card in there.
Even if you just want to check the antenna connections, go here:
http://www.ifixit.com/
Then you can decide if it is something want to tackle.
