Hi, I have a macbook pro (A1260) which shows thick purple and green vertical lines immediately on startup. The macbook doesn't respond to any key commands and will not display anything when an external monitor is plugged in.. It seems different to the other similar posts here as it doesn't seem to boot to the OS before the lines appear. Can anyone help?

Sounds like the infamous nVidia graphic chipset failure which was prevalent with the model MacBook Pro that you own. Apple had an extended warranty on them for awhile but is no longer in effect. If it is the graphic chipset that failed, it would not be worth repairing as the entire logic board would have to be replaced.

Well it is now on or over five years old. Advertise it on eBay and such as for parts only.

Yes there is if you happen to have a spare monitor or TV set that you can attach to your MBP. You'll need the correct adapter and cable - but that should prove whether or not it's the graphics chipset or the LCD itself that's the problem.
