We usually don't refer to Macintosh computer models with this info. I for one do not have it memorized what model a ma89611a is.

Tell us what its (display size, cpu speed, possibly the year of release, etc.)...and we may be able to give you some opinions.

    Specs:
    15" MBP '06 2.33 C2D 4GB 10.7; 13" MBA '11 1.8 i7 4GB 10.10; 21" iMac '13 2.9 i5 8GB 10.10; 5s & 5c
That's probably about right for that MBP. Personally I'd try to get it for $300-350.
Get the 10.5 disks from the seller or order Snow Leopard direct from Apple online for $20 and do a clean install to make it your own if you get it.

I have a late '06 15" with the 2.33 Ghz and I'd estimate it's current value at maybe $250 with a 500 GB drive and 4 GB of RAM.

Acccording to the system requirements for ML, yes.
You will need to buy Snow Leopard from Apple online for $20 - update it to 10.6.8 which will give you access to the Mac App store where you would then be able to get 10.8.

Personally, I would buy a new current model and would suggest the Apple refurb store for purchasing used.

Nick is our resident buys older model Macs on a semi-regular basis - perhaps he'll come back with some advice on buying used.

I agree with "bobtomay"...getting the MacBook Pro you mentioned in this thread for $300-$350 would be a good deal...but since it is a 15" MacBook Pro...$400 wouldn't be too bad. If it was a 13" MacBook...then $400 definitely would be on the high-side for a 2007 model.

As far as "What MacBook would you get?" Well...this is a pretty opened ended question:

    - There are lots & lots of MacBook and MacBook Pro models released since 2006.
    - It depends on what you want to use the computer for.
    - It depends on the size of your budget.

Conventional wisdom would be (if you're buying used)...would be to get the newest model you can afford.

    Specs:
    Mid-2012 MBP (16GB, 1TB HD), Monoprice 24-inch second monitor, iPhone 5s 32GB, iPad Air 2 64GB
If this really is capable of running Mountain Lion, I would max out the RAM on it or just leave it at Snow Leopard for the time being.

I'm skeptical because that's QUITE and old computer, but it is a 15" model with a discreet video card so maybe you can run ML with it.

I think you're going to find that machine slow, but OTOH for $300-400 you may not be able to do any better than that.

That is the model MBP I have, and I am running Mountain Lion without a hitch. It is starting to show its age a bit, but should be good for my usage for a few more years.

But, if I were buying today and dollars allowed, I would go a couple of years newer at least.
I've always wanted to be smart, handsome and modest. But, I guess I'll have to be satisfied with two out of three . . .
