Keyboard mapping

The mapping for the keyboard on my macbook has been going hay wire for the past year now, for instance; when I press comma both option keys are simultaneously activated (which in turn opens preferences for whatever application is in use), further examples include pressing the letter p for which slash is also pressed "p/" or space which activates caps lock

If anyone could help it would be really appreciated

Try resetting your PRAM.
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

If that doesn't help, get a new keyboard.
