Brand new convert here, in mail is there a way to get the list of messages to display on top and the preview pane on the bottom?

In Mail, open preferences, click on the "Viewing" tab. Put a check in the box that says: "Use Classic Layout". Then adjust the divider line to allow room at the bottom half to read your messages.
