Third Newb question in a row.

Time machine I know is the backup system for my iMac. Everytime I try to back up it searches for an "Airport" utility. What is that? Because I cant backup without it apparently.

Airport Utility is the tool that helps you configure your wifi settings, and Time Machine can be used with Time Capsule to back up wirelessly. But if you're using a plugged in external drive, you shouldn't need it. As soon as you plug in the drive, you should get a message asking you if you want to use it as your backup disk.

If you're trying to back up to a wireless external drive, then yes, you will need to configure your Airport settings before Time Machine will work.
