Anyone have WD world edition

ok i just got an airport extreme and a WD world edition to use as my time machine. the airport works flawlessly (took a min to setup but still awesomeness)

anyways i am having issues using this hard drive and was wondering if anyone else who has one had the same issues. i called apple and they said they don't support this and the guy at WD didn't know anything and ran me in circles for 45 min b4 telling me i had to call back on Monday and hung up with me...

the problem is i can see the drive in disk utilities to reformat it. and setting up Time Machine cant be done. even when it is plugged directly into the iMac it wont show in utilites


if anyone has any answers please advise.

if this does not work i will have to go back to best buy and get a usb external and plug that into my airport... Ethernet is so much faster

I can't remember if I have the exact same one as you, but I have a WD external (FW800) and I had to format it with my Windows machine first to a format that my Mac would recognize. FAT32. There was a free program I downloaded on my Dell to do the formatting. Can't think of the name and don't even have it installed anymore since I only needed it one time for one reason.

Are you formatting the drive as HFS Extended Journaled? Time Machine will not work with any other format.

There are also several product updates on the WD site that apply to the World Edition drives. The updates are specific for use with Apple's Time Machine. Have you downloaded the updates? LINK The same site includes instructions for setting up your World Edition for Time Machine. Give it a look.

Try the product updates recommended by WD first. I'm surprised the WD tech you spoke with didn't advise you about them.

DO NOT use Disk Utility to format that drive to FAT-32. That will cause it to have an additional EFI 200 MB partition which is difficult to remove. There is no reason to format that drive to FAT-32 anyway. Just follow the instructions given by WD to use it with Time Machine. See my other post to you.

There is no reason to format that drive to FAT-32 anyway. Just follow the instructions given by WD to use it with Time Machine. See my other post to you.

Well, when I got mine it was in NTFS and Disk Utility would not recognize it. Just like the OP was saying. That's why I suggested formatting it into a format Disk Utility would recognize and THEN he could format it as HFS Extended (Journaled).
Whatever. It's how I got mine to work....

I'm kind of surprised about that. Generally, the service support at WD is pretty good. Anyway, let us know if you can't get it resolved. The World Edition is a nice drive and should work well with your new AE. If the drive itself is defective in some way, just return it to Best Buy. You have 30 days to return it.

it all works now no formatting needed...

That worked fine in your situation. I wasn't saying it was something that should never be done as it obviously was the right choice in your case. But for him, it wasn't. The reason is Disk Utility will always create a small 200 MB protective EFI partition in front of the main partition. And it's a real pain to remove when trying to setup the drive for AE.

time machine is running and backing up everything now... ...and about 50% done of 340GB now. after which i will back up the MBP...

Good to know. Glad it worked out in the end. It appears I don't have the same HDD as macwannabe... I guess. I still haven't found my box to check the specific type. Sorry if I caused any confusion.
