mac wont boot up

hi , problems with a mac that wont boot up for me , when i turn it on , sreen goes usual grey colour with apple icon on it , twirling wheel under that , it sdoes this for a few seconds then closes down on its own m it then starts to open up again on its on and this goes on and on , ive tried keeping my finger in on the start button but no result, any suggestions please would be great, thanks,

There's not much we can suggest until you give us more info, starting with what Mac you're talking about.

In the meantime, what happens when you try to boot up from your clone backup? What happens when you try to boot from your restore DVDs that came with your machine?
