I have googled this issue and got limited results. Seems like a common problem with no concrete solutions. Like others, I tried to send an extra large attachment and now gmail won't connect via the Macbook's email program. Can someone point me to a good resource to fix this? I am a complete newbie to Mac sucked in by 2.5 years of flawless iPhone usage. I bought this MBP about 1 month or so ago.

I'm thinking that when you sent that large file that Gmail is in the process of handling it (deleting it) and temporarily suspended your account. You may have to wait for a "response" email from them telling you that it was too large and until it sends you that response it doesnt want to deal with you right now. Google might "spank" you a little longer just for trying it tho.

I believe Gmail has a 25mb limit now.

How long would it be off? The web version still works fine...its just the mail version in the Mac. iPhone still works fine as well.

can you send yourself an email to see if you get it?

Have you restarted the computer? If no. Restart. It may reset your internet connection.

Maybe unplug your modem for 15 seconds so that your ISP can reestablish a connection

I dont know if this will work but I'll throw it out there if nothing else works.

Open mail and under "file" select "add accounts".

You will be creating a new link to your gmail. Same information as the one you created originally.

Maybe something got changed somehow in the original one you created.

I would try and do it myself to see if it works but I dont want to screw up my email.

One last thing for weird and unexplainable stuff:

Some common problems, such as applications not loading or exhibiting strange behaviour, can be fixed by repairing permissions. Because Mac OS X is based on Unix, it utilizes ownership and permissions. Sometimes, key system files have their permissions changed to something other than what they are supposed to be by applications and, more often, installers. Repairing permissions fixes any accidental changes that may have occurred to the ownership and permission of key system files.

To repair permissions:

* Open Disk Utility, located at /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
* Select your startup disk on the left of the Disk Utility window
* Select First Aid from the tabs
* Click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button

I just cut and pasted that stuff in there so dont credit me with it.

The router gets restarted regularly because we have a Vista machine which randomly chooses not to connect to the Internet. I have used it on another network without issue.

How do I delete the account and start over?

Open "mail". Got to top left corner and click "mail". Click "preferences". Click on "account" (if you only have one it will already be blue). Then click the "minus" sign at the bottom of that column. You will be asked to confirm the removal of the account.

It will tell you that all your messages will be deleted. They will actually still exist in your gmail inbox. It will only delete emails that are on your computer if you are saving them there. When you created the "account" again it will sync it all up again.

I havent had to do any of this but if I had to, that is what I would do so dont blame me if it doesnt work please.
