Is that even a word? I'm not sure.

Back when I first registered on this site it was about September 2007 and I had just bought myself a shiny new Macbook Pro on Tiger. My brother had an iBook then too, and I remember we had quite a fun outing to our local Apple store when Leopard came out to get it at the evening opening, complete with free t-shirts!

I had a lot of fun tinkering with my MBP back in the day, but I hit one problem. I had that system for about six months before I decided to sell it to my brother to replace his iBook. Reason being that I used to play WoW on it and it would absolutely cook, the main thing. Scared me and I didn't want to destroy it.

So I went back to a Windows machine for a while, until now. I quit WoW, and so I got to thinking that I wanted the most fun 'general computing' experience I could have whilst at university, and then the more I thought about it, the more I thought that my setup was ridiculous - laptop on a cooling pad hooked up to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, external hard drives aplenty.

Wouldn't it be so much nicer to have an iMac sitting on my desk and free up all that space?
Wouldn't a nice, new 24" screen to replace my 20" screen-burned thing be lovely?
Wouldn't one of those dinky little keyboards just sit so cute on my desk?
Wouldn't it be nice to have that pretty desktop again?
And, wouldn't it be nice to be able to put a computer to sleep that didn't still have its fans whirring and start making strange noises when it was turned off? (Seriously, my laptop would grunt and bzzzt as if the hard drive was starting up again, unless I unplugged the power... scary stuff).

So off I went to the Apple store, armed with my student discount, and yesterday I bought myself a shiny new 24" iMac (the 2.66Ghz model). It really flies! I'm loving it, and I love having such a huge screen. Only thing is at the moment I sometimes find myself left-clicking instead of right, but I'm getting better at it and I hope it improves with time. I'm really amazed though at how intuitive I find the keyboard, I thought I'd absolutely hate it being a very speedy touch-typer, but it's phenomenal!

But the downside? I somehow lost my wallet the same day with all my cards :( I'm not sure if someone grabbed it off me, or if I knocked it out of my pocket whilst carrying the beast back to my car :( I was very upset about it, especially since I had to wait for an hour and a half for a security guard to arrive to let me into my property (silly swipe card system).

By the time I finally got inside though, cleared away all the dust gathering behind all my wires and the like, moved out the old screen... and plugged in my beautiful little iSue (as she's affectionately known), I was suddenly feeling a lot better :) I'm just glad I lost it AFTER buying the iMac...

Just wanted to share my little story. Waiting for the shopping centre to open again today to give them a call and see if anyone handed my wallet in... fingers crossed... if anyone did I might have to treat myself to an Apple Remote!

Oh I do actually have one question. I bought AppleCare with my iMac. Do I need to do anything? According to the AppleCare box it's an AutoEnrol thing, is there any way I can check the status to make sure it's all gone through?

Update: The shopping centre called and my wallet had been handed in - hooray! :)

Still, cancelled all the cards etc but at least I don't have to get new copies of some things that cost money!

sprite;

I grew up in a Mac family. I used one exclusively from the time I was in junior high all the way through my third year of college. At that point, I switched over to the Windows side and stayed there until February last year when I purchased a MacBook back in February.

I think of myself as a "switcher backer." :)

Great story sprite, glad all ended well. I'm waiting on my first mac via FEDEX (seems like for ever now). Can't wait to get it! Have fun!

I like the sound of switcher backer :)

I'm at university at the moment with my iMac.. but I have two weeks' holiday coming up, is it wrong that I don't want to go away because I want to stay and play with my new toy? Doh :D

Buying a new mac gives 1 year warranty with the choice of extending out to 3 years as long as it is done within that first 12 months. However if u don't buy the extension and if it is an recognised Apple fault they will pick up the Tab if it is out of the 12 month warranty but you have to guess if it will happen and what type of fault it will be. Have added this answer for those ending up here - you are covered for the 3 years so u can relax.

Thanks for that :)

Oooh, I'm loving this wake up schedule feature. I put my iMac to sleep at night and it's programmed to wake up at 6.45am each day with me, so everything is ready to go when I am!

Only regret I have so far maybe is that I didn't get the free iPod touch. I could've sold it or something I guess. I have no need of it since I've got an iPhone.. oh well :)

Oh great. It's only been two days and already I want to swap my Samsung Q45 (12") laptop that I take to university for my classes to something with a Mac flavour. D'oh! The new MBPs with the long life battery sound interesting.

Maybe when the next instalment of my student loan comes through...

(Yes, I know, taxpayers money going on my laptops etc - but in my defence the reason I can afford it is because I worked for a few years before school, paying tax and so have some savings! :))

Yes, there is! However, I am at work right now and I have the link saved under my favorites whenever I get home. My AppleCare is going to expire sometime this summer so about a month ago searching for that link on Apple's site and finally found it. I bookmarked it for future purpose, and of course for anyone else wanting to check it. I'll post it whenever I get home this evening.

:)
