    well to type the hash key u need to press ALT+3

    just though ppl might need to know this,

    shift 3 works for me. what keyboard do you have? i'm assuming not US or UK?

    iMAC,

    On my Macbook, using alt+3 gives me this: £, shift+3 gives me #, so it must be keyboard difference...

    mines the other way around.

    shift+number always brings up the character located on the number key... or at least thats what i've found. And mine has a on the 3 key.... so shift+3 gives me .

    do you have a # symbol on your number 3 key then?

    lukenn seems to have grasped what the OP was leaving out.

    i believe this has been pointed out before, but some of us don't remember that one of the differences between a US and UK keyboard is that the alternate character on the "3" key is a # in the US and a £ in the UK. alt, just gives us the alternate alternate.

    yes, very little use for £ for most Americans. Then again I use ü ä etc often too. then there's just  which is simply fun

    on my 3 key there is an £ on it,
    when i press shift+3 it makes £,
    when i press alt+3 it makes #
