need help playing videos

I'm trying to open .avi video's "divx" files.....and other normal avi and mpeg movies for that matter too. Quicktime hangs HEAVY when i try to open movies with it, most recently it won't even open the quicktime box....i can open some movies with divx, but others it says "the file appears to be corrupt"....quicktime says the same thing too. I downloaded and installed "perian" as directed by another member, but it didn't help. What am I missing? Thanks!

Do you have Flip4Mac or Windows Media Player installed?

I wouldn't recommend Windows Media Player, since support has long ago been discontinued for Macs. As mentioned by the other poster, Flip4Mac is it's successor, and works pretty well, for the most part.
