Hey guys, I'm going on holiday soon, and would like to encode some .avi files i have so i could watch them on my iPodTouch. I use a mac, and windows is out of the question in my household, so am wondering what everyone else uses!?

I would prefer some nice free software if im honest, something like handbrake, which has done wonders for my dvd collection, but unfortunately i cant seem to find info on whether it would be able to be manipulated into doing .avi files?

any help would be strongly appreciated! thanks

get and install Perian (codec bundle) and ffmpegx(the install may seem a little fiddly but i've never thrown anything at it that it couldn't handle)

An even simpler solution would be to download iSquint. It's very user friendly, just drag and drop.

Granted, ffmpegX has many more options, but if you just want to convert files to play on your iPod, then iSquint is definitely the way to go.

The best is handbrake. It is free and efficient.

Guys, Handbrake doesn't change file formats, it simply rips DVDs. The OP already has existing .avi files, Handbrake wouldn't help at all.
