Hi was just wondering if it's possible to buy a USB to ethernet adapter and hook my Western Digital MyBook to my router?

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as that. NAS boxes are actually mini-servers, not just a hard drive with an Ethernet card attached. There is actually a small computer lurking beneath the surface that handles security and file sharing tasks.

If you're looking for a NAS, check out the D-Link DNS-323. I bought mine around Christmas time and absolutely love it. If you want to use your MyBook, you can always pop the hard drive out of the MyBook enclosure and then pop it into the DNS-323.
