There are a number of "Shared Computers" showing up in my Finder window in Leopard. How do I get rid of them? Can they see and access my computer and files? I want to remove them, as they are computers belonging to people I don't know. I am connected to a public school network which requires a username and password.

They are simply other macs on your school network

if you dont want to be seen, go to preferences > sharing and make sure windows sharing and personal file sharing are turned off

foe added security make sure tou turn on the mac's firewall and enable stealth mode (might be in the advances button - but I am not using Leopard

I am curious about this, too. I followed your instructions and still am seeing an "unwanted network" in "SHARED." Also, are there good programs out there to monitor who is trying to access my network and/or what other networks are out there? I tried Kismet and IPNetRouterX quickly - wondering if there are others out there that will do what I want, and simply.

Thank you,
-J.

Update: this may have worked (enabling the firewall and stealth mode in "Security") - the unwanted network is no longer visible - it is 3 a.m. now so it's possible, that network/computer is just down now - I reversed the steps to see if it would re-appear and it did not - I also may not have waited long enough for changes to bind.

I'll check again in the morning to see if it's still not showing up.

I found some interesting info while researching:

shared computers in finder

I too had a computer showing up in my shared folder under finder. I realized it was my own computer or printer because I had checked share printer under "Shared" in System Preferences. When I unchecked it, the computer went away.
