It allows me to use one of these:

With my Macs and also allows the use of the Apple IR remote, Wii controllers and just about any USB Joystick or game controller to use as input to GarageBand, Logic or any other software that can be midi driven.
Using a Wii remote in each hand and a bit of configuring I can even play "air drums", great fun!
If anyone has an iED05 kit and needs the configuration settings PM me.
