I'm a newbie, and wanted to get some advice about buying a used ibook versus a new one. I'm interested in a used one to test the waters. I primarily just want to use it for internet surfing on the couch and familiarizing myself with the mac os environment. I'm sure it will grow from there.

On CL in nyc, most G4 ibooks are selling for ~$400 (negotiable).
One spec I'm looking at: Model Name: 14" iBook G4 Model Identifier: PowerBook6,5
> Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.1) Processor Speed: 1.07 GHz Number
> Of CPUs: 1 L2 Cache (per CPU): 756 KB Memory: 768 MB Bus Speed:
> 133 MHz Boot ROM Version: 4.8.5f0, 40GB HD, 2.5 hr battery life, Airport card installed

I see that mac.com sells refurbished MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - White
13.3-inch glossy widescreen display for $850 + tax.
1GB memory, 80GB hard drive, Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW), Built-in iSight camera.

Because I have read that the resale value of macs over the years remains quite good, i'm wondering if I should make the plunge for the new MacBook (cost of new mac could = roughly 400 if I re-sell in a few years for half purchase price).

PS. Any major differences between Airport Extreme Base new model vs. old?

I would definitely go for the MacBook. The MacBook will run circles around the iBook. The new airport extreme is wireless n while the older one is only g.

I have an old iBook G4 and the newer macbooks are a lot sleeker in addition to being way better machines.

My father-in-law has an old iBook. I wouldn't give this MB up for that thing, no way, no how! You'll be much happier with the MacBook.

Agreed. Pick up the MacBook. It'll be much better.
