Hello. I just bought and received the Hawking notebook card for Mac. Model no. HWC54D. I downloaded the driver, which is supposedly a Ralink driver. At the beginning of the driver install I am told to configure it in the network pane when done, like you would with a any other adapter. BUT, I install it, and it's not detected in the Network preference pane. Also, when openning the wireless app., the card is undetected. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Just a note, an Airport card is installed too, but I wanted a hi-gain adapter because the original B can be slow at times.

Are you sure that has a Mac driver? I remember looking at a bunch of G speed cards a while ago and Hawking didn't have either Linux or Mac drivers.

Are you running Leopard?

They note the driver is for Leopard. And with Hawking not really being a supporter of Mac OS in the past, it is very likely that their driver has not been tested, and may not work, with anything prior to Leopard.

Your best bet is going to be looking for support from Hawking. And validation that it will work prior to 10.5

Sorry Bob I do see the Leopard drivers but as he/she is using a 667MHz Titanium PowerBook probably not using Leopard as it does not meet those specs.

Yep. that's why my first question - doubt it supports any Mac OS prior to Leopard.

Yes, I'm running Tiger. Yes, there is a Tiger driver. The install package I have says Tiger right in the installer. And, this is an older card, manufactured BEFORE Leopard came out. There is even a Panther driver included with my package. Any more ideas?

Another thing. When I install my driver, the utility is named something like Ralink PCI utility, even though I downloaded this direct from Hawking, from this card's sight. ??

edit: More research.

Looks to me if you have the HWC54D - it is not compatible with Mac's.

All of the cards I found on their site that are compatible with Mac's have an A on the end of the product #.
That particular one is HWC54DA - and yes they do list each of these devices separately and have distinct support pages for each of them.

So if you have the HWC54D, think you need to send it back and get the DA version of the card.

sorry! sorry! sorry! It appears as if I typed this too fast. I DO have the HWC54DA. It's white, so it's the mac version. Sorry about this, I don't know why I didn't add the 'A', being I knew the model number. Next? Lol. Thank you though!

The only other thing I can see from what I've read is to make sure you've installed it correctly.

1) Turn off Airport - it will not work with Airport turned on.
2) Install the drivers and Hawking utility
3) Reboot the Machine
4) Insert the card
5) Go into System Preferences - Network to turn on the card

And looks as if it must be done in that order.

When their directions fail - suggest contacting their support - but unless they've improved - from Amazon reviews, you may not get much help from them.

would not turning off airport before the install make a difference? in their instructions it said to do so before launching the utility, or opening network preferences. i'll try again disabling it before hand though. thank you!

Still no luck. I don't know what the deal is!!?? When you insert a PCMCIA card into the slot, isn't OS X supposed to display a little icon in the upper right hand corner by the volume, airport and clock? I thought I saw this on a screen shot some place. Anyway, I don't have this.

GOT IT!!! After Googling for another half hour (after doing this for many days). I found the answer! It was a hardware problem, which I suspected. Being I had my bottom case off for an optical drive replacement, I looked around for a loose wire down there. I found on a forum that the correct wire is underneath the keyboard. I lifted it off, and saw it. It was disconnected. I popped it on, and boom! Everything works 100%. Writing this with my new adapter, which is noticeable faster than the original Airport. Thank you all!

Glad you got it working and thanks for reporting back.

That'd be pretty tuff to diagnose on a forum.
