virtual memory

Hey guys I'm not whiz bang at computers like you all are. I have a MBP 2.16 with 2GB SDRAM running Mac OS X 10.4.11. My virtual memory on the monitor says I have a VM size of about 6.5G and is down to like 1.5G and dissapears fast causing the computer to freeze! How do I resolve this?

i wasnt even aware that OS X used virtual memory, thought that died with OS9
