Hopefully a very simple question.

I accidentally dragged and dropped the 'home' icon from the side menubar in finder (the little house with my name on it) and it disapeared with that little puff of smoke thing.

How do I get it back.

Thanks

You just deleted the alias to your home folder : this has no repercussions whatsoever, it"s just a short cut, not the real content.

If you want to put it back in, just go to Macintosh HD -> Users and spot your user (or home) folder and drag it back in the lefthand sidebar. That should put the alias back.

You can also restore it to the sidebar (and many other things that you may mistakenly delete from the sidebar) by selecting Finder's Preferences dialog, Sidebar tab. You will see checkboxes for lots of sidebar items there. I have occasionally done the same thing you did, by mistake, and have most quickly corrected it this way.
