I have no problem getting online, or using my laptop in hotel rooms, but I can't connect through my wireless router at home. My friend has a PC and he can connect no problem. I get an error message saying 'there was an error joining the airport network 'Carrot'.

Any ideas on what I need to do to fix this?

What sort of encryption are you using on your wireless network settings?
Make & model of router?

Can you try changing to WPA-Personal. Using a WPA Algorithm of TKIP. Choose a new password of at least 8 characters.

Once setup reboot your router and try to connect from your macbook(?)
