Only thing i can think of is registering my desired name as a trademark. Not sure if this gives me legal rights to the domain name though

I dont think you could get it even if you trademarked your name, simply because he has had the domain longer than you have had your name trademarked.

As far as I know about people who buy domains just to get money from somebody typing it in. Legally, there isn't really much you can do unless this person is using it against you.
