Is it possible to get back the original desktop image? I switched to a blue one but want the old one back (purple something or other) that I saw when I first fired up my new iMac.

Are you talking about the desktop wallpaper? If so, right click on the desktop anywhere and click "change desktop background". The original wallpaper should be under "Nature".
