I turned my old 120 gb drive I pulled out from my Macbook as an external drive and I'm using it as backup using Carbon Copy. It only uses about 40gb. Can I still add and remove files and folders to it without messing up the Carbon Copy backup or should I just leave the space alone? I'm not using the sector by sector option. I just wanted to know if the available space is usable without harming the backup.

I have a similar setup that I use. As long as you're not messing with System folders and such, you should have no problems.

With SuperDuper which is much faster and with the registered version it is quite simple to do a Smart Backup in a matter of minutes on a regular basis
