Poor wi fi reception on new iMac

Hi,

I have been connecting to the internet (with a 2005 imac) using someones wi fi in my neighborhood. I just got a new imac though and it cannot pick up the signal. Is there anyway to boost the reception on the new imac to pick it up? I cant get cable in my house so setting up my own wi fi network is not going to happen.
