G3, hasworked fine for a couple of years.

Symptom:
1. v. slow to boot. I mean _very_ --- can take 1/2 an hour to get to a screen
2. mouse doesn't work
3. occasionally boots into BSD prompt
4. every so often prints
disk0s5: 0x8 (UNDEFINED)
5. in single user mode, fsck -y repeats the same errors:
a few "orphaned indirect node"
missing thread record
invalid directory item count

Can anyone give me advice as to what to do next. My wife does not, unfortunately, have a backup of her data?

Thanks,

big-tone

Sounds to me like her hard drive is starting to die. Only thing I can think of to save the data is with an external hard drive of some sort and copying files to it (not sure how you would do it without a mouse)

Hold t when it boots up get a firewire to firewire and back it up to another computer is what I suggest

Holding t actually turns your computer into an external firewire hard drive
