Photoshop - Can't edit images side by side...help?

For some reason when I open pictures....the red, yellow, green buttons are gone and its only a big gray background even when i maximize and minimize

how can i change it back so that I can drag layers onto a 2nd image?

Are you opening GIF files?

Try hitting the letter F key a couple of times, or the TAB key a couple of times. That should resize the window again.
