g3 with firewire drives good for file server?

I was given a g3 tower. It has firewire ports.

I just want to throw a gigabit nic in it and share out my external firewire drives.

I know its an old machine but I think it should be fine.

See anything wrong with the idea?

Your front side bus is the choke on your plans. If speed is not an issue then all will work fine but forget the gig nic because everything you throw at it for speed is lost on the bus.
