I use the finder to search for files (Apple-F). Recently, it just stopped working. Whether I'm searching the MAC hard drive or an external hard drive I have hooked up to the machine, nothing is returned. Even if I enter in a word that I know is in the file name....nothing is returned. I mean nothing. I could do a search for the Applications folder and nothing will come up. Why isn't this search function working? Please help!

You might have an issue with the Spotlight index or with permissions.

Download a program called Onyx or Main Menu. Do a Verify and Repair Permissions first, but if that doesn't fix it, then rebuild the Spotlight index.

Thanks, but I did that

Thanks, I did that and actually that's when it seems to stop working. I don't normally do a rebuild Spotlight index and after I did that is when this problem started. I can however use Spotlight to search, that seems to work fine, but it's not my first choice. I'd rather use the finder.

Just to let you know, the Finder search IS Spotlight. ;P

Since you did a rebuild, that's probably why nothing is showing up. You'll have to let it sit overnight as it reindexes everything on your hard drive.
