Folks, is their a way to quickly switch between tabs within Safari? Something akin to the alt-tab shortcut for applications?

You can change the shortcut to anything you like by using the Keyboard shortcuts preference pane.

System Preferences > Keyboard and mouse > Keyboard shortcuts.

It's pretty simple to create shortcuts from thereon. Let us know if you have any difficulty. (I've changed mine to Command + [ eliminating the shift key)

Opps... Sorry for putting this in the wrong place. And thanks for the info! I'm still learning Mac OS and totally forgot about the keyboard shortcuts preference pane. That's great!

If you want something similar to Alt + Tab, try Command + ~ (that's the tilde above Tab).

You can use this shortcut on any application that has more than one window open.

Okay, please bear with me: I've been looking through the keyboard shortcuts pane but can't seem to figure out where to change the key combination for this specific command in Safari (or any other application). What am I doing wrong? And I like the Command + ~ idea a lot.

Go to the shortcuts preference pane. Then click the + button at the bottom right. In the following Window, in Applications select 'Safari".
Menu title "Select Next Tab"
And then give the keyboard shortcut.

Once you get the hang of it you will realise that the whole of OS X can be customised this way.

Command + ~ is the default setting, you don't need to change anything to use it.

Wow, this is super cool. First of all, I misunderstood about the Command + ~. Now I realize that it is default enabled and it's a great shortcut that I'm using more and more by the hour! As for the tab switching, Command + ~ does not work for that, but I followed your directions, goobimama, and modified the shortcut keys like you did. Very logical and pretty quick.

Thanks to all of you for the help! Much appreciated.
