file sharing over a network

hey i was wondering how to set up file sharing. i've done the steps like enabling my public folder, turning on apple talk...

people can't connect to my public folder, and i can't connect to theirs. i'm trying specifically with a friend.

did i miss anything?

what is your friend running, Mac or windows?

mac. we're both running leopard.

did you specify which user you wanted to have access and what permissions they can have. By default i think all other user's have read-only access
