Is it ok to leave my macbook on for long periods of time, eg a few days or over night running a program or downloading. Im just worried that it will cause damage and wear.

See my response to this question.

And my MBP has run 24/7 for just over 13 months now.
The MB I bought the wife has now run 24/7 since last June.
They do go to sleep when not in use. The MBP, other than being turned off twice for multi-hour car trips, neither one of them have been shut down except for necessary re-boots.

my Mac has been through all sorts of situations xD

I'm an audio engineer volunteer and when we're setting up shows, it's running at full tilt for well past 72 hours on the trot. Like bobtomay, I just sleep my mac and occasionally restart it as a matter of refreshing everything :)

It really does no harm and the as far as affecting the life of the MB is concerned, it'll last you for quite a while (one would hope ^^) and there is very little one can do to dramatically reduce the life of their macbook

my question is..for anyone who does use their macbook as the main computer..and runs the computer 24/7..does it get really hot?

is it bad to leave the macbook on at all times?

The macbook does get hot.
After about 2hrs mine is uncomfortable on my knee.
It's only the left leg that gets baked though.
I don't know if the macbook pro is the same or not.

I forget where I read it, but the two hardest things on a computer are booting up and shutting down, so I only turn it off when I really need to.
