Just wondering if the wifi on the iphone works like the itouch. Do you have to pay for a service to use safari on the iphone or just a wifi conection will do? I am looking at just paying a phone service for voice calls and no texting or anything of the sort. I just want to be able to use wifi internet.

Wi-Fi on the iPhone is like Wi-Fi on any computer. It can connect to both open and closed networks - obviously the latter needing a password.

So its not like some cell phones that connect to the net through the cell. So you only really have to pay for minutes on voice calls and then texting and what not if you want to use it.

Depends where you live.
In the UK the contract with O2 includes unlimited data connection via Edge / GPRS as well.

Here in the US, when you use an iPhone on AT&T's network, the base contract comes with minutes, text messages, and unlimited data. You can use AT&T's EDGE network anywhere in the country. But you also have the option of connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot and browsing the Net using that instead of EDGE.
