So i am adding some more RAM and an extra hard drive into my Mac Pro tomorrow and need a bit of advice. First of all i hope i got the right RAM:

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?CSR-HX6424

And secondly the HDD I am getting is a 500GB seagate 32Mb cache which i want to act as my main hard drive. So i am going to re install leopard onto the new hard drive but how do i go about it? Shall i go to re instal leopard as i normally would but instead of selecting the original hard drive select the new hard drive and then some how re-form the old main hard drive?

thanks in advance

You need ECC memory so that RAM won't work.

When you install the new HD, it probably won't read correctly so it will ask you to reformat. Pop the Leopard disc in and it should eventually let you choose which HD you want to install OS X on. When you're running the Leopard install, you can go to Disk Utility and format the old 320GB drive to remove OS X if you wish.

Ah rats, didn't realise the ECC bit, ill be sending them back then. hehe

So for the HDD i am going to put the new one in slot 1 and old one is slot 2. Put in leopard disk and restart, reformat both and install OSX on HDD 1?

thanks bryphotoguy :)

P.S i am also thinking about adding a 2nd DVD superdrive to my Mac Pro. anything i should look out for? Its an early 2008 dual core Intel XEON. Also how do you open the second one with only one eject button on the keyboard?

It doesn't matter which SATA port you use for the OS X HD.

Yea, no problem.
Now, I did say I've seen someone use RAM with the standard heat spreaders because I have but I still recommend the spreaders Apple recommends. Does anyone in the UK sell RAM that has the spreader that looks like this?

I thought you said you ordered a new one... One of the January '08 ones. If they're for the 2.66GHz, those are the correct DIMMS for your Mac. If you have the 2.8GHz or any of the new 8-core, that's the wrong speed. PC6400 is what you need.

Ok. I was so confused a week ago when I saw your profile it said you had the 2.66GHz and you said you had the January'08 Mac Pro. I figured you sold the 2.66GHz, got the new one and forgot to change your profile.

Well, then that RAM will work just fine!!

So hard drive is in and working however the RAM is in and not even being recognized? I followed the instructions on the apple site, restarted and nothing is showing?
