Fan Noise Issue

Hi, I'm having a problem with the fan on my Macbook.

It's constantly running at 6200 RPM from the minute I open it to the minute I shut it off. It is extremely loud, and annoying, and I'm going on a flight later today, and don't want this noise annoying everyone on the plane.

It turns on even when I've had it turned off for an entire day, there is no way it could still be hot. My question is, how do I get the fans to slow down so this thing shuts up?

More than likely a runaway process. Need to figure out what it is and try to shut it down.
(If you are using Time Machine - turn it off when you disconnect the external drive - this can cause a runaway syslogd process when it can't find the backup drive.)

Check Activity Monitor or use iStat to see what process is consuming your CPU.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. I don't have Time Machine, I'm running OSX 10.5, so I'll see whats going on.

Any possibility this could be a hardware issue?

Ok, I checked, and there is nothing out of the ordinary running. It's still at 6200 RPM, and still loud. I even quit every program I had running, and it's still the same.

Help as soon as possible would be appreciated.

There is definitely something wrong. By way of comparison, the fans on my MBP are running at right around 2000 RPM. The machine is as quiet as the proverbial church mouse. I would recommend a trip to a nearby Apple store for potential repairs.

Agreed with mac57.
Just as an FYI: I have had at least a couple of runaway processes where Activity Monitor did not provide any indication of what was going on and iStat Pro did. Those of you that don't have it, it really is a great widget.

My MBP is so bloody silent it's almost like it is a fully solid-state device... I suppose the first time the fans kick in it will scare the heck out of me...

Mine SEEMS silent too, but if you look with iStat Pro you will see that two fans are silently whirring away at about 2000 RPM.

I'm having a fan issue but not from start to stop. I think it is related to the power adaptor. Does not seem to do it on battery. The adaptor box gets really hot.

Mine does it regardless of being plugged in or not. I think I'll hit up the Apple Store.

A friend of mine just got their macbook back form a fan/overheating issue and apple had to replace several inside components that got damaged from the overheating. Mine is in today being looked at for the same thing. Apple said this is a common issue with macbook's and macbook pro's...

My fan only comes on when I play Starcraft. ^_^
