Someone is selling a cheap imac G3 and I thought it would be good as a second machine. Does it support OSX?

Thanks

Do you have any specs besides iMac and G3 like CPU speed?

It could be anything from the first iMac G3, the Bondi Blue 233Mhz G3 to a 800Mhz G3 with Firewire, DVD Drive and 1GB RAM. That is the reason I asked. Any of them can run OSX but the very early models will not be very fast even if you upgrade the RAM to Maximum, but you can get Jaguar and even Panther to run good enough for basic Web and music.

Most of the early models need their Firmware upgraded before OSX is installed. You need to have OS9.1 installed to upgrade the firmware.

If you do get the machine then let us know the specs. I have a 333Mhz Grape iMac G3 with 512 Megs RAM. It runs 10.3 Panther decently for basic usage anyway.

To install Tiger you need at least a 350Mhz with Firewire as Firewire is a requirement for 10.4 Tiger to even install. Panther 10.3 will install on any of them.

Yes, the 800mhz iMac G3s were quite popular back in the day! ;D lol.
Sorry, I just had to correct the typo lol.
And I think the 700mhz came stock with a CDRW, unless the seller put a DVD in.

Other than that dtravis7 is spot on.

Anyway,
Did you end up getting it?
If you are still looking for one I saw one in the buy/sell/trade section not too long ago, i think it was from "fyrman" on the forums.

The 800 was a quick guess. I was lazy to look at the top CPU speed.

You can probably overclock it to 800 and watch the case melt! :D
