This problem occurs on three Macs, all running Panther: two are AGP graphics G4s and another is some type of G4 (not sure exactly which). Back when we were running 9.x, we could pop a DVD-RAM disc into the drive, format it, and start copying files over.

But now that we're on OSX, we can only use DVD-RAM discs that had already been formatted back when were using 9.x; those show up just fine. But if we try and insert a blank DVD-RAM disc, nothing happens. It doesn't mount at all. Anyone have any idea why it's doing this? It looks like we've got Hitachi GF-1000 drives, as per System Profiler.

We've tried new type I and type IV discs and neither can be read, while the past-formatted ones with files already on them read fine.

Oi, nevermind. For some reason OSX wasn't opening the format dialog automatically. A quick trip into Disk Utility formatted the disc and got everything back on track.
