I have a number of downloaded files that iTunes does not recognize. I've dragged them from users/my music to music/itunes/itunes music/artist and when i open itunes it shows one of the 15 songs. Any ideas?

What format are the files? Any .wma files? Because they have to be converted.

It doesn't work like that.

In iTunes you have to go to File > Import to Library. Then select the files.

Are there general rules about getting files to be recognized by iTunes that maybe i'm not adhering to???

Select the songs you want to add to iTunes and drag them into the app itself, not to the music folder as you're currently doing. iTunes will then add the music to its library and copy the songs to the default music folder automatically.

When I download an MP3 using something other than iTunes, I have it set to send the file to /Users/MyName/Music.

When I import the file to iTunes from 'Music', is it basically making a duplicate copy of the MP3 file?

In other words, once I've imported a song to iTunes, can I can safely delete it from Users/MyName/Music without iTunes losing the song?

Keep a copy of the songs in a folder on your desktop

Delete all instances in your music folder

then drag them in to the app, itunes will organise them for you and you will not have any duplicates in the itunes music folder
