We have the Airport Extreme 4.2.

How far can it be from a laptop and still have a decent connection?

I'm asking because we are moving our main computer with the Airport to the basement leaving the laptop upstairs.
Do you think we could still get a good connection?

If not, does the Airport Extreme (newest one) have a better range?

I believe that's an 802.11g router, which means you should get somewhere in the vicinity of 100ft, barring any serious obstructions such as an inordinate number of walls or exceptionally thick building material. One floor shouldn't seriously affect your connection. I've had machines connect from up to two floors away and still have a decent connection.

The new Airport Extreme is an 802.11n router, meaning it can potentially reach up to 300ft. If you have 802.11n equipped computers, you also gain an increase in network speed.

Thanks, also there is only 1 wall in obstruction, the whole upstairs floor is..."wall-free." Do You still think it will be OK because it might be a little over 100ft?

Remember, we're talking about line distance, not square footage. So with only a single wall, that router will have no trouble tackling medium to large houses.
